A legendary Dutch colonial-era restaurant and ice cream parlour that has operated on the same central Malang address since 1930. The interior is unchanged in spirit — ceiling fans, rattan chairs, waitresses in traditional dress, old photographs on the walls, wooden display cases — and the menu still centres on the ice cream that made Toko Oen's reputation: classic flavours served in metal coupes with the quiet formality of a colonial-era institution.
The food goes beyond ice cream: nasi goreng, satay, soup, and Dutch-Indonesian fusion dishes are all on the menu, and the cakes and pastries are the best in Malang. It is popular with elderly Indonesians as much as tourists, which tells you something about the quality and its place in local memory. Open daily from 8am to 9:30pm.
