Eating Out

Malang is one of East Java's best eating cities. Bakso Malang — meatball soup with noodles, fried tofu, and crispy wontons — is the local dish and the street version eaten standing up is often the best. Cwie Mie Malang (egg noodles in a clear broth with wontons) is the other signature dish. Rawon, the dark black beef soup coloured by buah keluak paste, is served throughout East Java but Malang's version is among the finest.

The Pasar Besar traditional market is the best place for cheap eating in the morning — nasi pecel (rice with vegetables in peanut sauce), steamed corn, and fried snacks. Jalan Tumapel in the centre has numerous bakso stalls that locals rate highly. For something more comfortable, Toko Oen on Jalan Basuki Rahmat is the colonial-era institution worth visiting at least once.
