Things to Do

Malang rewards a day or two of unhurried exploration. The colonial old town along Jalan Ijen and around the Alun-Alun (town square) is Malang's finest quarter — broad tree-lined boulevards, art deco buildings, the Tugu Hotel. The Jodipan and Arema painted villages by the Brantas River are the city's most photogenic recent attractions, and the Museum Angkut in nearby Batu is one of the best museums of its type in Southeast Asia. For most visitors, Malang is also the base for reaching Mount Bromo and the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, the most dramatic landscape in Java.
