Day Trips

The Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is Malang's most spectacular day trip, accessible from the south via the Ngadas village route — less crowded than the northern approach from Probolinggo. Mount Bromo itself (2,329m) rises from a sea of volcanic sand inside the Tengger caldera; the pre-dawn climb to the crater rim for sunrise is one of East Java's defining experiences. Arrange transport from Malang the night before.

Batu (15 km northwest) is a hill resort with Museum Angkut, orchid gardens, apple orchards, and cooler temperatures. It makes an easy half-day. Coban Rondo waterfall is en route to Batu, a 20-minute walk from the road. Tumpang village (20 km east) is the staging point for treks to Mount Semeru; the Candi Jago temple nearby has extraordinary bas-relief carvings from the 13th-century Singosari kingdom. Pantai Balekambang (70 km south) is Malang's nearest beach, with a Hindu temple on a rocky islet connected to shore by a causeway.
