Jodipan Colorful Village

A riverside kampung along the Brantas River in central Malang that was transformed in 2016 when university students painted every surface in rainbow colours as part of a community-led urban beautification project. The result is densely photogenic — narrow stairs between houses painted in clashing tropical colours, murals on every wall, laundry strung above painted alleys. It is genuinely cheerful rather than contrived, not least because the community that lives here has invested in it and continues to maintain it.

There is a small entry fee (around 5,000 IDR) collected by the community. A suspended bridge connects Jodipan to its sister village Kampung Arema across the river, which is painted blue. Give it 30-45 minutes; combine it with the nearby Bakso Malang stall on the riverbank, which is as good as any in the city.

A story
Jodipan was a neglected riverside kampung (urban village) until 2016, when students from Muhammadiyah University approached the community with a proposal: let us paint your houses in exchange for your cooperation in cleaning the Brantas River. The residents agreed, the students painted, and within months the village had become a tourist attraction generating more income than the residents had previously earned from informal labour. The story is cited as a model for creative community-led urban regeneration across Indonesia.
