Museum Angkut

Southeast Asia's first and largest transport museum, located in Batu about 20 km northwest of Malang city centre at an elevation of around 800 metres. The museum displays over 300 vehicles — antique cars, motorcycles, bicycles, aircraft, and boats — arranged through a series of themed exhibition zones that are more theatrical than academic: a 1950s American diner section with a vintage Cadillac, an art deco European boulevard, a Batavia colonial street, and an outdoor aviation section with full-size aircraft. The result is absurdly photogenic and genuinely fun.

Allow two to three hours. Entry fees are around 100,000-150,000 IDR depending on the day. The museum is in Batu town, which also has the BNS night market and Selecta theme park if you are travelling with children. The cooler temperatures at Batu's altitude make a trip here a pleasant escape from Malang's lower-city heat.

A story
Museum Angkut — "Transport Museum" — opened in 2014 in Batu, a hill town above Malang, and became immediately one of East Java's most popular attractions. The collection of over 300 vehicles is arranged through themed zones that include a recreation of 1950s Las Vegas, a mock European village, a Hollywood-themed section, and a Batavia (colonial Jakarta) street. The juxtaposition of antique Bugattis, vintage pedicabs, and Indonesian becak (cycle rickshaws) in a single museum is deliberately celebratory of transport history across cultures and eras.
