The Grand Mosque of Banten (Masjid Agung Banten) dates to the 16th century and served as the principal mosque of the Banten Sultanate. Its distinctive five-tiered roof blends Javanese and European architectural influences, and the adjacent minaret — an octagonal white tower — was reportedly designed with input from Dutch architect Hendrik Lucasz Cardeel. The surrounding complex includes royal tombs and the ruins of the old Surosowan Palace, making this more than a single monument: it is the heart of old Banten.
The mosque remains an active place of worship and an important pilgrimage site. Visitors should dress modestly and remove footwear before entering. The complex is about 10 km north of Serang, easily reached by angkot from the Serang terminal.
