Baluwarti is the walled neighbourhood immediately surrounding the Keraton Kasunanan — the palace's inner city, reserved historically for the royal family, court servants, and craftsmen in service to the Susuhunan. The name comes from the Dutch "baluarte" (bulwark), referring to the walls that once enclosed it.
Walking through Baluwarti today you encounter a neighbourhood that feels genuinely distinct from the rest of Solo. The streets are narrower, the houses older, and many residents are descendants of families who served the court for generations. The neighbourhood retains workshops for the batik and silverwork that were produced here for royal use. It is the part of Solo where the connection to the palace world feels most tangible.
