Pulau Kembang

Pulau Kembang — "Flower Island" — is a small forested island in the middle of the Barito River, half an hour by boat downstream from Banjarmasin. It is a popular short excursion, usually combined with a morning at one of the floating markets.

The attraction is the colony of long-tailed macaques that live in the trees and around the boardwalks; the monkeys are entirely habituated to visitors and will accept (or steal) food, so secure bags and remove anything dangling. A network of wooden walkways crosses the swamp forest in the centre of the island. Boats from Banjarmasin run all morning and most operators include Kembang on a half-day floating-market tour.

A story
At the heart of the island is a small Chinese-Indonesian temple guarded by a much-photographed statue of Hanuman, the Hindu monkey-king. The long-tailed macaques that live wild on the island are seen by some local Chinese as descendants of the temple's first guardians; they receive ritual offerings of bananas on holy days.
