When to Go

Banjarmasin is hot and humid year-round, with temperatures consistently around 28–32°C. The region has two distinct seasons: the wet season runs roughly from October to March, bringing heavy rainfall and higher river levels; the dry season from April to September is generally more comfortable for travel.

The floating markets operate year-round but are at their most atmospheric in the dry season — river levels are lower, the water is calmer, and early mornings have a misty quality that makes for excellent photography. Heavy rains in the wet season can sometimes disrupt early morning market trips. The period around Ramadan and Eid is a significant time in this deeply Muslim city; accommodation books up and the atmosphere is festive but some businesses change hours or close.
