The string of Dayak Ngaju villages along the Kahayan upstream from Palangka Raya is the easiest way to see Central Kalimantan's indigenous culture in something close to its original setting. A day-long klotok trip from the city takes in several — wooden stilt houses on the riverbank, the distinctive carved sandung used for the second burial of ancestors, and patches of traditional weaving and rattan work.
A local guide is essential — both for translation and so you arrive correctly and respectfully. Most Palangka Raya hotels and tour operators can arrange a trip.
