Saparua

Lease Islands escape from Ambon, with Pattimura history, old villages, beaches, and coral.

Saparua is the largest of the Lease Islands east of Ambon, close enough for a determined day trip but better with a night or two. It has the classic Maluku mix: clove-era history, Christian and Muslim villages, bright water, and tourism that still feels small-scale.

The island's strongest sight is Fort Duurstede, tied to the 1817 Pattimura rebellion against Dutch rule. Around it are village stops such as Baileu Saparua and Ouw, known for pottery, while the coast gives you swimming, snorkelling, and boat trips to Molana Island.

Saparua is not polished. Boats from Ambon, local transport, and simple facilities all need patience. That is part of why the island works: it still feels like a lived-in Maluku island first and a visitor destination second.
