Pulau Ai

Tiny Banda island of nutmeg groves, white sand, old VOC walls, and shore snorkelling

Pulau Ai is a small island in the Banda group, west of Banda Neira, with one village, nutmeg and kenari almond groves, old fort walls, and reef close enough to reach from shore. It is remote even by Maluku standards, and that remoteness is the attraction.

The island belongs to the old Spice Islands story. The Dutch East India Company fought brutally for control of Banda's nutmeg trade, and Fort Revengie is the clearest reminder on Ai. The rest of the island is quieter: lanes, gardens, drying spices, white sand, and water that can be excellent for snorkelling when conditions are right.

Pulau Ai is not a checklist destination. Come if you are already in the Bandas and want a small island where history and reef are close to the village, and where the pace is slower than Banda Neira.
