Tobelo is the main town of North Halmahera, far from Indonesia's usual island routes and all the better for travellers who like rough edges. It is a working coastal town of coconut plantations, small ports and mostly Christian villages, with Christmas and Easter celebrated in a style that feels very different from much of Maluku.
The town itself is not polished, but the surrounding country gives it enough weight for a spare day or two. To the north are Lake Galela and Luari Beach, with grilled freshwater fish, white sand and easy snorkelling. Inland, Lake Paca sits in a quieter bowl of green hills, while the Hibualamo Monument in town points back to local North Halmahera house forms and identity.
Tobelo is also close to harder adventures. Tanjung Bongo has clear water and small coral islets, while Gunung Dukono rises inland as one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. Treat the volcano with real caution: access can be closed, eruptions are frequent, and the crater area is dangerous.
