Doom Island

Doom Island sits just off Sorong's coast, a short boat ride from the main port. It is small enough to walk around in an hour and has a few beaches, a quiet fishing village, and a handful of war-era ruins. The water is calm in the channel, and the views back across to the mainland are pleasant.

Local boats make the crossing regularly throughout the day; you negotiate a fare at the harbour. There is nowhere to stay on the island and very little to eat, so come for a few hours rather than a full day. It is a useful escape if you are stuck in Sorong waiting for a Raja Ampat ferry.

A story
Despite its grim name, 'Doom' has nothing sinister about it — the name is a corruption of the Biak word 'dum', meaning landing place. The Japanese occupied the island during the Second World War and built fortifications here; some concrete bunkers and a few rusting gun emplacements survive in the undergrowth.
