Eating Out

Makassar has a serious food culture. The city's signature dish, coto makassar, is one of the great soups of Indonesian cuisine — rich, deeply spiced, and not easy to find in the same form outside South Sulawesi. Seafood is excellent across the price range, from night-market stalls along the Losari promenade to sit-down restaurants where you point at what you want and it goes straight onto the grill. The city is predominantly Muslim, so pork is rare and alcohol limited, but the variety within those constraints is wide. Any local will happily point you toward their favourite coto warung.
