Makassar is a predominantly Muslim city and alcohol, while available in larger hotels and some restaurants, is not a big part of life here. The coffee scene is another matter. Sulawesi produces some of Indonesia's finest arabica — Toraja coffee in particular is known for its full body and earthy depth — and a growing number of cafes around the city serve it well. The cafe scene has expanded quickly in recent years, driven by a young, urban population with a taste for good espresso and somewhere comfortable to sit. Early evenings are the busiest time.
