Getting There

Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (airport code UPG) sits about 25 km east of the city centre and handles frequent direct flights from Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, and Singapore, plus connections from elsewhere in Indonesia via those hubs. The road into the city can be slow in traffic; allow an hour.

Pelni ferries connect Makassar to Java, Kalimantan, Maluku, and the eastern islands — useful for reaching parts of Indonesia not well served by air. The ferry terminal is centrally located. Long-distance buses depart from Terminal Daya in the north of the city, with regular services to Tana Toraja (8–10 hours) and other Sulawesi destinations.
