The easiest way to get around Makassar is by ojek (motorcycle taxi) or through the Grab and Gojek apps, which work well across the city and are cheap by any standard. Pete-pete — shared minibuses running fixed routes — are used by locals but the routes are hard to decipher without local knowledge and are not worth the effort for short visits. Regular taxis are available and metered, though app-based rides tend to be faster to arrange.
Fort Rotterdam and Losari Beach are close enough to each other to walk between, and the immediate waterfront area rewards an hour on foot. For getting further afield — to Paotere Harbour, the Trans Studio mall, or out of the city altogether — a motorcycle taxi or hired car is the practical choice. Hiring a car with a driver is the best option for a day trip to Rammang-Rammang.
