Things to Do

Makassar rewards slow exploration. Fort Rotterdam, one of the finest surviving Dutch colonial forts in Southeast Asia, anchors the waterfront and tells the story of the Spice Trade and the kingdoms it disrupted. A short walk along the coast brings you to Losari Beach, the city's evening gathering point, where vendors and families spill out onto the promenade at sunset. North of the centre, the old harbour at Paotere offers a living glimpse of the Bugis seafaring tradition — wooden pinisi schooners still load and unload cargo much as they have for centuries. The city is dense and traffic-heavy, but its main sights cluster close enough to explore on foot or by short ojek ride.
