The most rewarding day trip is east to Bintan, reached by a short ferry from Telaga Punggur to Tanjung Pinang — spend the afternoon at the old palace and fort on historic Penyengat Island. Closer to home, drive the Barelang Highway the full length to Bridge 6 (a half-day round trip) for bridge views, seafood stalls, and the Vietnamese refugee camp on Galang. Reef-fishing charters and dolphin-watching trips run from the northern coast, mostly aimed at Singaporean weekenders.
