Batam is a Free Trade Zone, which keeps prices on imported goods, electronics and clothes well below Singapore — one of the main reasons day-trippers come over. Most of the action is in Nagoya: Nagoya Hill Mall is the biggest and busiest, DC Mall trades on cheap branded clothing, and Lucky Plaza is the place for electronics, CDs and DVDs (always bargain). For something less polished, the Robinson & Ramayana mall is where locals shop and a good place for inexpensive Indonesian clothing. Outside Nagoya, Panbil Mall in Muka Kuning serves the industrial estates and has the most authentic local prices.
