Things to Do

Batam is not a sightseeing destination in the conventional sense — most visitors come for golf, beaches, or shopping. That said, the island has a handful of curiosities worth a half day: the Barelang Bridges that string the island chain together, two large Buddhist temples in Nagoya, and the remains of the Vietnamese refugee camp on Galang Island. The Duriankang Dam reservoir is a quiet escape from the industrial sprawl if you have your own transport.
