Tanjung Kelayang is the most famous stretch of Belitung's coastline — a headland where enormous granite boulders, some the size of houses, emerge from a sea of vivid turquoise and white sand. The boulders are ancient (some of the oldest granite formations in Southeast Asia) and have been shaped by erosion into extraordinary rounded forms, balanced on each other in ways that seem unlikely.
The beach at Tanjung Kelayang is the main jumping-off point for island-hopping trips to the surrounding islets. Traditional wooden boats and faster speedboats can be hired here for day trips. The most popular circuit takes in Lengkuas Island (with its Dutch lighthouse), Pulau Pasir (a tiny sandbar that disappears at high tide), and a few snorkelling spots above shallow coral reefs.
The beach itself is good for swimming in calm conditions; the water is clear and warm year-round. Best visited on a weekday to avoid weekend crowds from Jakarta.
