Balaputradewa Museum

The Balaputradewa Museum is the provincial museum of South Sumatra, set in a large compound on the northwestern outskirts of Palembang. It is named for the ninth-century Srivijayan king whose move to the kingdom of the Pala in northeast India is documented in the famous Nalanda copperplate inscription on display here.

The collection is much wider than the central museum at Kuto Besak: Srivijaya-era statuary, ethnographic material from Lampung and South Sumatra, traditional Palembang houses reassembled in the gardens, and a serious textile gallery covering songket and tapis. A taxi from the centre takes twenty minutes; the visit takes two hours.
