Kampung Arab Al-Munawar is a small Hadrami Arab quarter on the south bank of the Musi River, a short ojek ride from the southern end of the Ampera Bridge. The settlement was founded in the eighteenth century by Yemeni traders, and a tight cluster of around fifteen traditional wooden Limas houses around the original mosque survives almost intact.
The houses are still lived in by descendants of the original founders. Several can be visited during the day for a small donation, and the residents are notably welcoming. The architecture — raised wooden platforms, intricately carved screens, finely worked door frames — is among the finest surviving examples in Palembang. Visit in the late afternoon, when the heat eases.
