The Blue Mosque (Masjed-e Kabud) was built in 1465 under the Kara Koyunlu dynasty and is considered one of the finest examples of Timurid architecture in Iran. Its name comes from the turquoise and deep blue faience tilework that once covered the exterior almost entirely. A catastrophic earthquake in 1780 brought down much of the structure; what you see today is largely a restoration completed in the 1970s, but enough original tilework survives — particularly in the portal — to convey how extraordinary the original must have been.
