Sa'at Tower

Tabriz's central clock tower and city hall, an interwar landmark

Sa'at Tower, also called the Tabriz Municipality Palace, dominates the central Sa'at Square. Built between 1934 and 1935 by German engineers in a Bavarian neoclassical style, it still functions as the city hall and main office of the municipal government. The clocks on each of the four faces of the tower are visible from much of the surrounding centre.

The lower floors contain a small museum about the city's history, with photographs and city-planning models. Even if you skip the museum, the square is the natural heart of downtown Tabriz — a useful orientation point and a good place to sit and watch the city go by.
