21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art

The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art opened in 2004 and quickly became one of Kanazawa's defining institutions. The building is a circular glass structure designed by SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa) — low, open, and deliberately non-hierarchical, with multiple entrances and no clear front or back. The design reflects the museum's philosophy of accessibility.

The museum holds an excellent permanent collection alongside temporary exhibitions. Several major installations are exhibited outdoors or in public spaces within the building, and these are free to visit. The paid galleries have a strong international programme. The museum shop is one of the best in Japan for design objects and art publications.

A story
The museum's most famous work is Leandro Erlich's "Swimming Pool" — a transparent pool viewed from above looks entirely full of water, with figures apparently standing at the bottom. The illusion is created by a layer of water just a few centimetres deep over a glass ceiling. Visitors can walk below it and look up at the people standing in the "water" above them.
