Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art

The Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art focuses on the traditional arts and crafts of Ishikawa Prefecture — Kutani ware ceramics, Kaga lacquerware, Kaga Yuzen silk dyeing, and gold and silver metalwork. The collection is the best single place in Kanazawa to see these traditions in their historical context, from earliest examples through to refined Edo-period masterpieces.

The museum has a good temporary exhibition programme that often brings in major works from other institutions. The building is near Kenroku-en and can be combined with the garden, the castle park, and the National Crafts Museum in a single day.

A story
The museum's greatest treasure is a pair of Kutani ware dishes with a crane-and-pine design dating from the mid-17th century — considered the masterwork of the Old Kutani style, characterised by deep greens, purples, and yellows applied with unusual boldness. The dishes are so iconic that reproductions appear in shops all over the city.
