Magome

Restored Nakasendo post town of stone lanes, old inns, and mountain views.

Magome is one of the best places in Japan to feel the old Nakasendo road under your feet. The village climbs a steep stone lane in the Kiso Valley, with dark wooden houses, waterwheels, teahouses, small museums, and views across the mountains toward Mount Ena. It is carefully restored and popular, but it still works: the slope, the cobbles, and the old road give the place a shape that modern towns rarely keep.

This was the 43rd post town on the Nakasendo, the inland route between Edo and Kyoto. Travelers, officials, porters, and merchants stopped here for food, lodging, horses, and orders from the shogunate. Today the main pleasure is simple: walk the preserved street slowly, look into the small museums, buy chestnut sweets, and let the town's water channels and steep roofs do their work.

Magome is also the starting point for the Magome-Tsumago Trail, the classic short walk through forest and hamlets to Tsumago. If you have one spare day from Nagoya, Matsumoto, or the Kiso Valley, this is a much better use of it than another city cafe. Come early or stay late if you want the old road before the bus groups arrive.
