Former Hokkaido Government Office

Known locally as the Red Brick Office (Akarenga), this handsome neo-baroque building was completed in 1888 and served as the seat of Hokkaido's government for eighty years. The red-brick facade with its octagonal dome is one of the most photographed buildings in Sapporo. The surrounding gardens are particularly pretty in spring when the cherry blossoms are out, and in autumn when the trees turn. Free to enter.
