A thirteen-hectare oasis of green right in the city centre, just west of Sapporo Station. The garden was established in 1886 and contains over four thousand plant species, including native Hokkaido flora and an old-growth forest that predates the city. Within the grounds, the Batchelor Memorial Museum houses an important collection on Ainu culture. The gardens close early in winter and are partly inaccessible under snow, but from late April through October they are a welcome escape from the city streets.
