Nagasaki sits at the western edge of Kyushu and several worthwhile destinations are within easy reach. The Shimabara Peninsula, with its volcano, hot springs, and Christian rebellion history, is the most rewarding day trip. Sasebo and Huis Ten Bosch make for a contrasting half-day if you want something different.
