Bars and Cafes

The Maruyama district has been the heart of Nagasaki nightlife since the Edo period, when it was one of Japan's three great pleasure quarters along with Yoshiwara in Edo and Shimabara in Kyoto. The vibe today is calmer — a mix of historic ryotei, small bars, and izakaya in lantern-lit alleys. The Shianbashi crossing at the entrance to Maruyama is the gateway, marked by a bronze post that once held the curfew gate. For a drink with a view, head up Mount Inasa or to one of the harbour-front hotel bars.
