The steep hill rising south of the harbour was set aside in 1858 as the foreign settlement, and the surviving Western houses, cobbled lanes, and stone retaining walls give Higashiyamate a character unique in Japan. Glover Garden anchors the top of the hill, with Oura Church just below — the oldest standing church in Japan. The streets known as the Dutch Slope (Oranda-zaka) wind down through more old residences toward the harbour. The neighbourhood is small enough to walk in an afternoon and is easiest to reach by tram to Ouratenshudo-shita.
