National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims

A separate memorial space next to the Atomic Bomb Museum, opened in 2003 and dedicated specifically to the victims rather than the history of the bomb. The architecture is contemplative — a long underground hall lit by a column of natural light reaching to the surface, twelve glass pillars containing the names of the registered victims. Free to enter. The contrast in scale and tone with the museum next door is striking and worth experiencing in sequence.
