Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum

A spare, glass-and-stone Kengo Kuma building straddling a canal at the south end of Dejima Wharf, opened in 2005. The permanent collection is built around Spanish painting — a quirk explained by the post-war donations of a Nagasaki-born collector — with works by Picasso, Dali, Miro, and a number of Goya prints. Rotating exhibitions of contemporary Japanese art are usually worth catching. The rooftop terrace gives a striking view across to Mount Inasa. The basement café opens onto the canal.
