Old Hong Kong Shanghai Bank

A handsome three-storey neo-Renaissance building on the Dejima Wharf side of the harbour, designed in 1904 by Yosaku Shimoda — the same Japanese architect responsible for several Tokyo banks of the era. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation used it as its Nagasaki branch until 1931. Today the ground floor is a free museum on Western-style banking and merchant trade in the open port era, with restored teller windows and a vault you can walk into. Easily combined with a visit to Dejima across the canal.
