Shianbashi

The historic gateway to the Maruyama pleasure quarter, marked today by a bronze sculpture of the old curfew post and a small plaque. Shian-bashi translates as "Bridge of Hesitation" — the name of the bridge the bronze post replaced, where men supposedly paused to consider whether to enter the quarter or turn home. The bridge itself disappeared when the river was diverted in the early 20th century. The crossing is now a busy nightlife corner, with karaoke bars, izakaya, and small eating places spread out down the surrounding alleys.
