Siebold Memorial Museum

Philipp Franz von Siebold was a German doctor who came to Dejima in 1823 as a physician for the Dutch East India Company and spent six years quietly building one of Europe's first serious collections of Japanese plants, animals, books, and ethnographic artefacts. He was expelled in 1829 when authorities discovered he had acquired a map of Japan, then a capital offence. The museum sits on the site of the school he founded in the city — Narutaki-juku — where he taught Western medicine to dozens of Japanese students. Small but absorbing if you want the back-story of the Western scientific knowledge that flowed through Dejima.
