Sofuku-ji

Built in 1629 by the Fuzhou Chinese community, Sofuku-ji is the most spectacular of Nagasaki's three Obaku Zen temples. The vermilion-painted Daiippomon (first gate) is the most photographed temple entrance in the city — pure southern Ming dynasty architecture transplanted into Japan. The main hall, dating to 1646, is one of only two structures in Japan designated National Treasures that were built by Chinese craftsmen. The temple is busy on the 26th of every month, when a Chinese-Japanese fusion food market is held on the grounds.
