Suwa Shrine

The chief Shinto shrine of the city, founded in 1614 partly as an instrument of state suppression of Christianity — local residents were required to register here. The approach climbs 277 stone steps up a wooded slope, with successive torii gates marking the ascent. The shrine sits in a tranquil grove at the top, with views back over the city. Suwa is the focus of the Kunchi Festival (7–9 October), Nagasaki's biggest event, when neighbourhood troupes perform dragon dances and Dutch-themed parade floats here over three days.
