Teramachi

Running along the foot of Kazagashira hill on the east side of the river, Teramachi — literally "Temple Town" — is a single street lined with major Buddhist temples. The Tokugawa shogunate established this row in the 17th century partly to monitor the Chinese merchant community, and the temples here were built and funded by different Chinese trading factions: Sofuku-ji by the Fuzhou Chinese, Kofuku-ji by the Nanjing Chinese, Fukusai-ji by the Zhangzhou Chinese. Wandering the lane is one of the most atmospheric walks in the city.
