Chofu Mori Residence

Meiji-era villa of the Mori clan with formal Japanese garden

The grand Meiji-era villa of the Mori clan, feudal lords of Choshu domain and key figures in the Meiji Restoration. Built in 1903 by Mototoshi, the 14th head of the family, the residence combines formal reception rooms with an extensive Japanese garden enclosed by white plaster walls. Emperor Meiji himself stayed here. The contrast between the formal Western-influenced building and the serene garden beyond is striking. Located in Chofu's samurai quarter, a short walk from Kozanji Temple.
