Ganryujima

Island where Miyamoto Musashi defeated Sasaki Kojiro in 1612

A small island in the Kanmon Strait, permanently associated with the duel between the legendary swordsmen Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. Statues of both fighters stand at the point where the fight took place. The island itself is quiet and largely undeveloped — a 10-minute ferry ride from either Shimonoseki or Mojiko port. Short walking paths circle the island, and the views of the strait and the Kanmon Bridge from the shore are excellent.

Ferries depart from the Karato ferry pier; the crossing is infrequent so check the schedule before you go.

A story
The duel between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro on 13 April 1612 is the most famous sword fight in Japanese history. Kojiro was the superior technical swordsman; Musashi arrived deliberately late, carved a wooden sword from an oar on the ferry ride over, and killed Kojiro with a single strike. The island has been called Ganryujima — Ganryu Island, after Kojiro's school name — ever since.
