Hinoyama Park

Hilltop park above the Kanmon Strait with wide views over Shimonoseki and Moji

Hinoyama rises above the Kanmon Strait at the eastern edge of Shimonoseki, giving one of the best views of the narrow waterway between Honshu and Kyushu. From the summit you can look across to Moji, down to the bridges and shipping lanes, and out toward the Seto Inland Sea.

You can reach the top by ropeway when it is running, by road, or by hiking up from the lower park area. Spring brings cherry blossoms and azaleas, but the view is the reason to come in any season. It is especially useful early in a visit, because the geography of the strait suddenly makes sense from above.
