A National Treasure and one of the most beautiful temple complexes in western Japan. The main hall's roof is covered in cypress bark thatch — a rare and costly technique that gives the building an extraordinarily organic quality. The grounds are spectacular during cherry blossom season, when the pale pink flowers frame the dark thatched rooflines. Kozanji was founded in the Kamakura period and remains an active Rinzai Zen temple in the heart of Chofu's old town.
