A small island in the Seto Inland Sea, twenty minutes by ferry from Takamatsu, also called Onigashima — "Ogre Island" — for its supposed link to the Momotaro folktale. The single village is quiet, the beach is decent, and the main attraction is a large artificial cave near the summit, dug out in late prehistory and now lit and presented as a tourist site with ogre statues throughout.
Megijima also became part of the Setouchi Triennale circuit in 2010 and has a small permanent collection of contemporary art installations, including pieces by Yodogawa Technique and Olafur Eliasson. Easy day trip; ferries run several times a day, more frequently in summer.
