Ali Baba

Long-running seafood institution one block from the corniche

Ali Baba has been on its corner of King Hussein Street since the 1960s and is the standard recommendation for Aqaba's grilled fish — the menu is essentially what came in off the boats that morning, charcoal-grilled whole and served with rice, mezze, and a green salad. Sayadiyeh (fish on spiced rice with caramelised onions), kibbeh with shrimp, and the daily catch are the usual order.

The dining room is informal — wooden tables, ceiling fans, a long bar — with a small terrace on the side street that fills first in good weather. Prices are reasonable, alcohol is served (Aqaba's special-zone status), and the staff are friendly to wandering travellers. Open from late morning until late evening; no reservations.
